The Lily whites produced a stunning performance to record a 3- 1 win, sealing qualification to the Champions League Round of 16. On 28 minutes, Alli, the English midfielder who has come in for criticism this season for his below par displays opened the scoring by turning him Kieran Trippier’s cross. Spurs played without fear and duly scored a second goal courtesy of the same man.
On the 56th minute, Alli registered his 2nd goal by scoring, with the help of a deflection off Sergio Ramos that wrong-footed Kiko Casillas. Just nine minutes later, Christian Eriksen made it 3-0 after Harry Kane teed up the former Ajax man.
The Wembley crowd got nervous after former Manchester United man, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal on the 80th minute, though the Spurs players held on to record a famous win. It was Rea Madrid’s first group-stage defeat in the Champions League for the first time since October 2012.
Kane came back from an injury while Alli was playing his first European following his three-game ban in the Europa League last season while for Madrid, Nacho came in for Raphael Varane. Dele Alli, 21 was exceptional as he showed his potential suitors the hype around him. Real Madrid are expected to bid for him in the summer transfer window.
Alli was enthusiastic as he harried and pressed when not with the ball while he looked for a better placed teammate when he had the ball. Spurs have shown that Madrid are not invincible and it would serve as a blueprint to other teams left in the competition.
